Finding an ally in DJ Sagara, a pirate radio DJ who knows more than he is letting on such as the intelligent Overlord Inves, Kota finds himself in the middle of a Sengoku period-like brawl among various factions for the right to possess the power of Helheim Forest–the proverbial forbidden fruit itself–and the fate of life on Earth as he knows it. In the meantime, including Team Baron's leader Kaito Kumon as Armored Rider Baron and Kota's Team Gaim teammate Mitsuzane Kureshima as Ryugen, other Armored Riders appear to amass social power throughout Zawame: Team Raid Wild's Ryoji Hase as Kurokage, Team Invitto's Hideyasu Jonouchi as Gridon, and the perfectionist ex-soldier Oren Pierre Alfonso as Bravo.

Encountering a mysterious girl resembling his Team Gaim teammate and close friend Mai Takatsukasa, Kota uses a Sengoku Driver belt and the Orange Lockseed to become a samurai-armored warrior that is later named Armored Rider Gaim. When Team Gaim's captain disappears after informing Kota of a strange belt he found, Kota discovers that the Lockseeds and Inves are from an alternate dimension known as Helheim Forest. Kota Kazuraba, a member of the dance group Team Gaim, tries to find his place in the world while torn between his loyalty to his teammates and his sister Akira's insistence that he starts acting like an adult and find a proper job.

Also rising in popularity is the Inves Game, a simulator that uses strange devices known as Lockseeds to summon monsters known as Inves. To escape the resulting feeling of oppression, many of the youth in Zawame formed dance crews called Beat Riders to bring joy back into peoples' lives. In Zawame City ( 沢芽市, Zawame-shi), a large company known as the Yggdrasill Corporation transformed the once-bustling suburb a city into a jōkamachi. If Amazon Riders’ first season does well, I hope it leads to its sequels being released in the future. Of course, the well-known one was Saban’s Masked Rider, which borrowed footage from Kamen Rider Black RX. Prior to this release, Kamen Rider the First, Toei’s attempt to bring us a “realistic” take on the original hero, came out in North America through Media Blasters. While I’m not a fan of the name Amazon Riders, I’m happy to see another uncut Rider title in the West. This works well with the fact that Amazon loves to rip his enemies into pieces, which was an element in the original Amazon series. One thing that sets Amazons apart from the other installments is that it’s aimed towards older viewers, instead of younger ones. Thankfully, they didn’t cancel the idea and we can see Toei’s bug-eyed biker officially kick evil in the face.

This came as a surprise since it took a long time for them to give us an update on their plans to stream it outside of Japan. Luckily, we can scratch Kamen Rider off the list since Kamen Rider Amazons is streaming on Amazon Prime in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, the U.K., and Germany as Amazon Riders.

While it’s impressive to see these titles arrive in the West, there was one franchise that didn’t cross the pond. Shout! Factory gave us some classic Super Sentai shows ( Power Rangers’ source material), Tsuburaya released a few Ultraman titles on streaming Websites, and Kraken Releasing brought the dark late-night franchise known as Garo to Blu-ray in North America. It’s 2018 and I’m still amazed at the number of official tokusatsu (live-action special effects) productions that have left Japan.
